ZAP UP: retractable folding stair for occasional access

A clever stair for lofts and storage platforms

ZAP UP is a smart ladder–stair hybrid fixed high on the wall to reach upper levels when needed. It is ideal for lofts, storage platforms or small mezzanines where a conventional staircase would be too bulky. In the open position, it provides a comfortable, regular climb; once folded away, it leaves the room almost exactly as it was before.

Space-saving solution for narrow rooms and corridors

Developed for compact interiors, ZAP UP only occupies the floor area while it is being used. The lower section rolls out on wheels and slides under the fixed upper section, so circulation in the room is completely clear again afterwards. The combination of straight steel stringers and solid varnished beech treads creates a sturdy, comfortable stair that blends well with both contemporary and industrial-style interiors.

Why choose the ZAP UP staircase?

Space efficiency for occasional access

ZAP UP is made for situations where you need to reach a high volume but cannot reserve permanent floor space for a stair. Available only as a straight wall-mounted flight, it requires very little depth and no bulky stairwell. When folded, it projects only slightly from the wall, making it an ideal solution for narrow corridors, walk-in closets or storage rooms.

Robust steel construction with solid wood treads

The stringers are cut in one piece from 10 mm steel plate, giving the stair excellent rigidity and stability. Varnished solid beech treads project slightly beyond the structure to provide a secure foothold and add warmth to the technical look of the steel. This mix of materials allows ZAP UP to feel at home in both living spaces and workshop environments.

Smooth sliding mechanism on wheels and rollers

The movable bottom section is fitted with rubber wheels and rollers that glide inside the upper part. This guided mechanism makes opening and closing smooth and controlled, without sudden movements or heavy lifting. A single person can easily pull the stair into position and fold it back against the wall once access to the loft or platform is no longer needed.

Comfortable step geometry and enhanced safety

Although ZAP UP is a space-saving stair, its step geometry has been carefully designed. Riser heights between 200 and 225 mm, a going of 80–100 mm and a fixed tread depth of 100 mm create a consistent, predictable climbing rhythm. The slightly overhanging wooden treads improve grip underfoot, while optional handrails in steel or stainless steel, with round or flat profiles, provide additional support when going up or down.
